All spaces will be for general parking with four stacked parking spaces.

“This is a short-term pain for a long-term gain”, said PIM Project Manager Ben Reynolds. “We know how critical parking is at the Lab.”  During the B1 parking lot closure, the closest spots would be in the small lot at Building 56A, stacked parking in front of Building 55, Lot J1, and Lot D, the Pit.

Why are wheel stops being added to these spaces? As a private vehicle commuter this is deeply frustrating. Wheel stops force ingress and ingress from only a single aspect of the parking slot, which limits flexibility in stacked parking slots, and in cases of rows of parking slots with narrow aisles.

We understand wheel stops can feel restrictive, but they were added to improve safety and efficiency for all lot users. The intention is to help keep vehicles within parking boundaries, protect pedestrians and property, and maintain clear aisles for smoother traffic flow.

Guidelines from OSHA, the National Parking Association, and the Federal Highway Administration support wheel stops as a best practice for reducing low‑speed collisions (IIHS data), improving vehicle alignment, and lowering liability risks.
