“While this operational permit process is new to the Lab, the Fire Marshal’s office is committed to making this transition as smooth and easy as possible for everyone,” said Amie Krigbaum, Senior Fire Inspector. “Once you notify us of any of the conditions that require a permit, one of the Lab’s fire inspectors will contact you for the next steps.”
What are Fire Operational Permits? Fire Operational Permits are required under California Fire Code Section 105.5. These permits allow operations to proceed for a set period (typically 12 months, renewable annually, or for a limited time) after a focused survey and inspection confirms that minimum fire and life safety requirements are being maintained.
When are Permits Required? These permits apply to all operations falling under CFC Section 105 and related procedures at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and its leased facilities. Examples of Lab activities that typically require a Fire Operational Permit include:
- Fueling station, both portable and stationary, at Building 76
- Fire Hydrant usage for non-fire suppression. Examples include using a backflow device on a construction project or for a hot work operation.
- Oven/Furnace usage.
- Occupancies (interior) over 50 people for an event or meeting.
- Occupancies (exterior) over 1000 for an event or meeting.
- Tent structures or membranes over 400 sq. feet in size (multiple tents placed together could also trigger a permit).
- Hot work falls under Fire Operational Permits, but is already controlled under the Hot Work program, which may be modified in the future.
- Food truck permits, which are currently in place for all food trucks on site.
