The reading of Twas the Night Before the Periodic Table has become a Lab winter tradition. Written by the Lab’s Aliyah Kovner to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev’s discovery of the periodic table, the poem’s reading by our Director and Deputy Directors has become a highlight of the Lab’s end-of-year virtual holiday gathering.

  • For this year’s celebration, we want to extend the tradition by inviting new voices to join in the reading. If you’d like to submit your own or someone else’s name for consideration, fill out this form, and start practicing the pronunciation of “Mendeleev.”
The six winning readers will be drawn at random from all names entered by November 28, and will be announced on November 30.
Readers must be able to attend a virtual rehearsal the week of December 5 and the Lab’s virtual holiday gathering on December 9.
