The Black History Month speaker series sponsored by the African American Employee Resource Group (AAERG) starts with a town hall featuring Dr. Asmeret Berhe, the Director of the Office of Science for the Department of Energy on Friday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. Lab Director Mike Witherell will moderate the town hall.
Dr. Berhe, who has served in her role since 2022, is on leave from UC Merced, where she serves as a professor of soil biogeochemistry and holds the Ted and Jan Falasco Chair in Earth Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in biogeochemistry at UC Berkeley and worked as a graduate student at the Lab.
Dr. Berhe is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of America, and a member of the inaugural class of the U.S. National Academies’ New Voices in Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
This year’s Black History Month theme is Black Inventors and Innovators. In addition to Dr. Berhe, speakers will include Lab employees Theresa Triplett, Satya Gontcho a Gontcho, Jonelle Basso, and James Lee during the month. See the AAERG website for more information about the speaker series.
