The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning notice for some lithium-ion batteries used in Rad Power e-bikes due to a fire hazard. See the CPSC website for a list of the hazardous batteries.

Hazardous batteries can unexpectedly ignite and explode, posing a fire hazard to consumers, especially when the battery or its harness has been exposed to water and debris.

It is recommended that e-bikes brought to a Lab location have a UL-listed battery or NTRL equivalent.

When shopping for an e-bike, consider the motor size for optimal performance on the Lab’s hill site.  You can park the bike in any space near a building as long as the bike does not block doors, egress paths, or stairs. Charging the e-bike battery is allowed at the Lab, but you must get approval from the Lab’s Fire Marshal, Mike Torkelson, at fire@lbl.gov.
