Fire Prevention Week is a time for each of us to stop and think about fire safety at work and at home.  It is observed each year during the week that includes Oct. 9, marking the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on Oct. 8, 1871.  President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance in 1925, making it the longest-running public health observance in the United States.

This year’s campaign is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower”, putting the spotlight on lithium-ion batteries.  These batteries store a lot of energy in a small space, and can overheat, start a fire, or explode if overcharged or damaged. By learning how to buy, charge, and recycle these batteries safely, you can help prevent a fire in your home.

View and download some tips regarding lithium-ion battery safety and what you can do in your home and workplace to reduce the outcome of a fire.
