Beginning Monday, August 25, through Tuesday, September 30, the Lab will conduct hazardous vegetation removal to reduce fire risk and enhance site safety.
This phase of work will involve clearing small trees, brush, and other vegetation to create defensible space around Wildfire Temporary Refuge Buildings 74 and 84, particularly the five-foot immediate zone. Clearing this area will significantly enhance the buildings’ effectiveness as wildfire refuge locations, especially in fast-moving wildfire scenarios where evacuation may not be possible.
Smaller eucalyptus trees and sprouts will also be removed before they become larger hazards, and select trees along roadways will be cleared to improve emergency evacuation routes and access for first responders.
To ensure ecological integrity, a registered forester and qualified biologists have conducted thorough surveys of all work areas to safeguard the natural ecosystem and minimize disruption to wildlife.

Traffic Impacts: Weekday Work:
- August 25 – September 5: Lot U1 will be closed (at Building 74F).
- August 27 – September 2: Centennial Road will have intermittent lane controls with flaggers for approximately four business days, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
- September 2-3: No traffic impacts expected; the crew will access the site via the fire trail on the south side of B70A.
- September 4: No traffic impacts expected; the crew will be working below B76 so there may be minor delays entering and exiting the driveway at the fuel station.
- September 8-9: No vehicular or pedestrian traffic to the loading dock at B77.
- September 10-11: No traffic impacts expected.
- September 15: There will be single lane traffic control around B74 to B84.
- September 16: There will be single lane traffic control on Calvin Road, east of Strawberry Gate.
- September 17-21: No traffic impacts. Parking will be decommissioned by B74F.
- September 23-24: No traffic impacts. Parking will be decommissioned.
Traffic Impacts: Saturday Work:
- September 6 & 13: Lawrence Road impacts are being evaluated; details will be shared in a future update.
- September 20 & 27: Centennial Road will have intermittent lane controls with flaggers between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Grizzly Gate will be closed to all incoming and outgoing traffic on these days.
