Starting Monday, July 7, UC Berkeley will begin hazardous tree removal work near the Foothill Lot as part of the UC Berkeley Wildland Fuel Reduction Project. This project aims to reduce wildfire risk on and around the approximately 800-acre Hill Campus, situated in the hills east of Berkeley and Oakland, and adjacent to the Lab, the main UCB campus, and East Bay Regional Parks.

The project will encompass roughly 24 acres, divided into four distinct work areas (or polygons), with the following anticipated timelines:

  • Hearst Fuel Break: July – August
  • LHS: August – September
  • Gauss Way / SSL / MSRI: September – October
  • Summit Road: October – November

Each polygon will focus on either defensible space creation and maintenance (vegetation management with 25 to 50 ft from a building) or roadside treatment (vegetation management of up to 100 ft from a roadside). Work will include tree removal, tree pruning, brush and grass abatement, and debris removal. Temporary flaggers will be present to assist with equipment movement during this time. Minimal impacts are expected.
