As of May 7, 2025, anyone over 18 who needs a Lab badge or access to the Lab’s main hill site must present a valid form of ID. If a state-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, is used it must be compliant with the REAL ID Act.
If you already have a valid Lab badge there is nothing you need to do. Your badge will continue to be the method used to access the Lab. However, a REAL ID, passport, or other approved documents will be needed to board aircraft and access federal facilities, such as other national laboratories. Having a REAL ID driver’s license or identification card may be more convenient than using the alternatives.
Is Your License Compliant?
A California-issued REAL ID driver’s license or identification card is marked with a golden bear and star. Other states have similar markings on their driver’s licenses and identification cards.
Applying for a REAL ID in California requires proof of identity, proof of California residency, and a trip to the DMV. You will be asked to provide your Social Security number on your REAL ID application (exceptions may apply).
Visitors, Construction Workers, New Hires, Job Applicants and Others
Visitors, family members, job applicants, Guest House guests, construction workers, conference attendees, new hires, or anyone who is processed through the Lab’s site access management system will have their identity verified as part of that process. They can use:
- A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license from any state
- A valid passport from any country
- Any other REAL ID-compliant identification; see the full list.
Site Security will have alternate procedures in place to accommodate those who do not have a REAL ID until they can obtain one.
