With over 1400 Lab users, the Lab’s carpooling partner Scoop Commute offers a convenient, affordable, and sustainable commuting solution for the Lab community, helping to alleviate parking issues. We spoke with Haoyue Jiang, a Graduate Student Research Assistant in the Materials Sciences Division, about her experience using Scoop to enhance her daily commute.
Q. What motivated you to start using Scoop for your commute to the Lab?
Haoyue Jiang: After moving to a new apartment last fall, I realized that my commute was taking longer, despite the shorter direct distance to the lab. I started looking for a new, more efficient way to commute.
Q. How has Scoop changed your daily commute experience?
Haoyue: Scoop has significantly reduced my commute time by 80 minutes per day. Previously, I was spending two hours commuting.
Q. What’s been the biggest benefit or surprise about using Scoop?
Haoyue: Beyond the time savings, I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to chat with scientists and engineers during my commute. It makes my trips to and from work much more enjoyable.
Q. Could you walk us through a typical commute day using Scoop?
Haoyue: A Scoop driver typically picks me up around 9:30 a.m. and drops me off right in front of my building. In the afternoon, I head to the Guest House around 5:30 p.m. for my ride home.
Q. What advice would you give to colleagues considering using Scoop for their commute?
Haoyue: If you’re a graduate student who can’t park on site, or if you often struggle to find a parking spot when you’re running a bit late, definitely give Scoop a try! It eliminates all the usual parking hassles.
*Lab Promotion: From April 14 through May 2, Berkeley Lab riders only pay $1 per trip with Scoop Commute — no matter the distance. Reserve your ride today.
