If you are looking for a ride to the Lab, or want to share your commute, the Lab is introducing Pave Commute, a rideshare app just for those associated with the Lab.

Once you set up an account, you can find rideshare matches using the map or review the suggested matches. You will see all possible matches based on the days and times of your commute.  You will only be matched with Lab staff or UC Berkeley affiliates who live near you.

“It’s important to look at all the matches,” said John Chernowski, parking demand and transportation manager. “There may be a nearby match who wants to be at the Lab at a different time than you plan to arrive, but it is worth reaching out to see if there is a possibility of an arrival time that meets both persons.”

It’s easy to get started.

  • Go to the Pave Commute page to get the app
  • Sign in with your work email address
  • Enter the verification code
  • You will receive 100 points, or coins, for activating your account
  • You can earn additional coins for each shared trip or use of public transportation

The point value will be moved to your Bucketlist account, the Lab’s peer-to-peer recognition system once a quarter. At Bucketlist, you can redeem points for experiences including naming a goat.

“It’s great to have the app make trusted matches,” said Chernowski. “But Pave Commute also gives the Lab statistics we can use in understanding commute behavior at the Lab. All data collected is anonymized, and the user can toggle the start/stop mode to ensure no tracking occurs. The Lab has commute commitments to the City of Berkeley, UC, and the Department of Energy, and the app can provide data that showcases how we are lessening our commute impact on the community.”
