Prabhakar was the former director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA, where she started her career in national security in 1986. In 1993, President Clinton appointed her director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Prabhakar has also served on the College of Engineering Advisory Board at the University of California, Berkeley. She graduated from the California Institute of Technology with a master’s in electrical engineering and a doctorate in applied physics.
