As the second week of National Preparedness Month rolls in, the focus is on wildfires, how we can all help prevent them, and why it’s crucial to protect yourself, your family, and your workplace before they strike.

Berkeley Lab’s Emergency Management team will host a hybrid lunch-and-learn at noon on Thursday, Sept. 12 to discuss the serious threats to life and health that wildfires pose, and how being prepared can help you evacuate safely and minimize risks.

“Wildfires create serious health risks and can cause significant property damage,” said Ayla Quesada, Berkeley Lab’s drills, training, and exercises team lead. “But being prepared can reduce risk and provide peace of mind during uncertain times.”

Part of what will be discussed on Thursday is the Lab’s multidisciplinary Wildfire Preparedness Project Team, which is leading the effort to develop comprehensive strategies to mitigate the impact of wildfires on the lab community. Team members will unveil efforts to update the Lab’s Zone Map, which includes switching Zone 1 and Zone 2, color-coding each zone, and adding new buildings to the map of the hill site. Knowing your zone is essential to being prepared for a wildfire emergency.

As part of National Preparedness Month, this week’s activity is to enroll in local emergency alerts at calalerts.org. These alerts provide time-critical information, such as when to evacuate because of an incoming wildfire. Each county has an alerting program, and if you work in one county but you live in another, you can sign up for both. Remember to download your  Preparedness Passport and mark which activities you’ve participated in to receive credits and have your name entered for a chance to win prizes.

Lunch-and-learn events, focusing on pandemics, wildfires, and active threats, will be held at the Lab’s hill site every Thursday at noon this month.

Add events to your calendar and don’t forget to download your Preparedness Passport at go.lbl.gov/npm. To receive passport credit for reading this article, please complete the form here

  • Assemble a Go Bag: Pack essential supplies, including documents, medications, and non-perishable food.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor local weather forecasts and emergency alerts.
