Strawberry Gate, one of three gates providing access to Berkeley Lab, will close beginning Monday, Nov. 4, for eight months, for the construction of a new gate structure and updates to the gate entrance flow. The gate will reopen in late June 2025.

The gate will close on Monday, Nov. 4, for approximately eight months, with a targeted reopening in June 2025. To compensate for the loss of Strawberry Gate, Grizzly Gate hours will be expanded to weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Grizzly Gate continues to be open for exiting 24/7.

The gate’s current single incoming lane configuration restricts the number of vehicles that can be processed and the guard enclosure needs technological and physical upgrades to speed up entries. The Strawberry Gate construction project will replace the outdated gate enclosure, increase the number of incoming traffic lanes, and double the ability to process incoming vehicles during commute hours.

While this closure means some will need to alter commute patterns, this upgrade is needed to continue to build the Lab of the future. The construction project will improve traffic and safety and provide more efficient access to the Lab by increasing the number of incoming traffic lanes and doubling the ability to process incoming vehicles during commute hours.

A briefing with project leaders to discuss the project’s benefits and the steps being taken to alleviate the impacts of the gate’s closure is scheduled on Monday, Oct. 7, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Thank you for your understanding of the importance of this project and your continued support as we continue to improve the Lab’s infrastructure.
