Earthquakes formed California as we know it. They are a somewhat unpleasant reality of living in the area. You can’t control the timing or the intensity of the next earthquake, but you can control your response.
Learn more about earthquakes and the ShakeAlert notification system with Bob DeGroot, Physical Scientist, United States Geological Survey (USGS), in a Lunch and Learn on Thursday, Sept. 17, at noon. The session will be on Zoom. Add to your calendar.
De Groot is an operations team lead for the USGS-managed ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System, a public safety system serving 50+ million people in California, Oregon, and Washington. The system delivers alerts to people on their cell phones and triggers automated actions, such as slowing trains and closing valves, to protect water supplies.
Then, for those who like hands-on learning, you can meet the team, learn, and spin the prize wheel on three Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 9, 16, and 23, at the B91 food trucks. Add to your calendar.
