To provide a quicker, smoother, and more reliable commute, the Lab is updating the Downtown Berkeley BART routing for the Potter Street/JBEI shuttle beginning Monday, July 20. These improvements directly address rider feedback.

What is Changing: The redundant outbound loop through downtown Berkeley (which previously traveled down Oxford, Allston, Center, and Fulton) will be removed. Instead, outbound shuttles heading toward Potter Street will now travel down Hearst and turn left directly onto Shattuck Avenue.

Key Benefits:

  • Faster Commutes: Bypassing the congested Allston and Center streets cuts approximately 3 minutes off the travel time between the hill and Potter Street.
  • Safer, Easier BART Transfers: Shuttles will stop on opposite sides of Shattuck Avenue. Because the Downtown Berkeley BART station has entrances on both sides, riders no longer need to cross the street to transfer.
  • Less Confusion: Riders can intuitively wait on the side of the street that matches their desired direction of travel.

What You Need to Know: Beginning July 20, downhill riders (towards Potter/JBEI) must use the new stop on the west/southbound side of Shattuck Avenue at the BART entrance.
