For the past 21 months, a fence lined with green cloth has screened much of the activity in the center of the Lab’s hill site. It’s not a mystery; it’s a new 47,743-square-foot building that will house food service (and a coffee bar!), conference facilities, and a home for Operations services such as Security, Human Resources, and the Health Services Clinic. The foundations are being laid now; workers are beginning to raise the structural steel. The building is scheduled to open in Spring 2027.

Meet some people who are bringing this enormous new space to life.

And now, it’s time for you to get involved. The building needs a name.

This new space will act as a central commons for the Lab, a hub for employees and visitors alike to gather, collaborate, and connect as one Lab. Take a look at the renderings of the building, scheduled to open in 2027, and let your creative brain take flight.

Please use the Google form to suggest a name and explain how you hope to use the new space to encourage collaboration and innovation. All submissions will be added to a time capsule placed on the grounds of the new building, ensuring everyone’s ideas become a part of the building’s foundation.

All names will be considered by the Lab’s senior leaders for final selection and approval. The chosen name will be shared at the Lab’s annual virtual holiday celebration at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 17. (Note: We are not accepting any person’s name—not even E.O. Lawrence. Unlike Wang and Chu Halls, which were funded by UC Berkeley, DOE buildings cannot be named for persons.)

Share your creative name suggestion by Friday, Nov. 22.
