As we prepare for the holiday break, it’s imperative that we leave research and office equipment in a safe condition.

Why is that important? There is limited staff over the holiday shutdown, and that lack of readily available resources can turn a little problem into a big one. For example:

  • A small water leak that would normally be noticed by staff can turn into a flooding situation over time.
  • Or, a small electrical fire that could be quickly identified and extinguished may grow into a major fire event.

What can we all do to help?

  • Unplug sensitive electronics and instruments before leaving for the break.
  • Unplug space heaters, heat tape, and heating systems that are not absolutely necessary. Inspect those heating systems that must remain on. Even low voltages in a faulty circuit can result in a fire over time.
  • Turn off unneeded water systems and close water valves if possible.
  • Unplug small appliances such as coffee makers and microwave ovens.
