I had the pleasure of working with Paul quite a number of years ago when the laboratory I directed at 3M sponsored a project on which he was a primary investigator, and later I had the opportunity to see him present his work in various forums. I always came away impressed by the high caliber of his technical work, the integrity, thoroughness and inherently bias-free fairness in his analyses, as well as the thoughtful consideration he gave to all the questions (even when mine were poorly worded – he had a knack for intuiting my intent and improving my inquiry!), and above all the gentle kindness he displayed with everyone in his interactions. He truly exemplified what it meant to be “a gentleman and a scholar”.
