Recently, an incident occurred at another national lab, serving as an important reminder for all of us. An individual was struck by a vehicle and sustained severe injuries requiring emergency air transport to a hospital.
Closer to home, there has been a troubling increase in vehicle-related safety concerns on the site, including speeding, running stop signs, and passing shuttles and cyclists by crossing into opposing traffic lanes. While these incidents have not resulted in accidents or injuries, they are clear warning signs not to become complacent.
Please take a moment to recommit to these essential campus vehicle, cyclist, and pedestrian safety practices:
- Observe the speed limit. The campus speed limit is 15 mph unless otherwise posted.
- Stop completely and yield. Come to a full stop at stop signs and always yield to pedestrians.
- Stay alert. Avoid distractions and remain aware of pedestrians, cyclists, wildlife, and changing road conditions.
- Never pass shuttles or other vehicles. Do not pass shuttles, construction vehicles, or other vehicles on campus.
- Use extra caution around construction equipment. Large vehicles have significant blind spots and require additional space.
- Back up carefully. Reverse slowly and verify your path is clear before moving.
- Share the road. Give cyclists and motorcyclists adequate space and respect their right to the roadway.
- Put distractions away. Whether driving, cycling, or walking, keep your attention on your surroundings—not on your phone.
Safety is built on mutual respect and shared accountability. Drivers must remain vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists, just as they must also stay aware of their surroundings. If you observe an unsafe situation, speak up. A simple reminder to a colleague can prevent an injury.
