Berkeley Lab’s hill site is divided into six numbered zones, utilized by various Operations divisions but primarily used during emergency responses. Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1, Zones 1 and 2 will be flipped to create a more logical numbering flow. Those entering the Lab from the main gate, Blackberry Gate, will first encounter Zone 1. The remaining zones will continue in numerical order across the Lab from west to east.

Understanding which zone you work in is crucial for your safety in the event of an emergency. The Security and Emergency Services (SES) team relies on this zone system to issue emergency instructions. Familiarizing yourself with the zones and staying informed about them will help ensure you can effectively respond in any emergency situation. Take time now to learn about our Lab zones and identify which zone, or zones, you typically work in. Also, identify the zones you park in or where you meet Lab shuttles.

Collect a new zone badge map

  • Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 17, SES personnel will hand out updated zone badge maps to all who ride or drive through Lab gates.
  • Shuttle riders: At Strawberry Gate, personnel will board shuttles to hand out new zone badge maps this week. For shuttles entering via Blackberry Gate, maps will be handed out at the Building 65 stop in the mornings for the rest of this week.
  • Pedestrians can collect a map from the guard shacks at Blackberry and Strawberry Gates.
  • SES team members will also be on hand with maps at the Building 91 food trucks on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and at the Building 67 food truck on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m.
  • New zone badge maps will continue to be available at the Badge Office after this week (see hours here).

All members of the Lab community should take an active role in emergency preparedness. Together, we can ensure a safer working environment for everyone at Berkeley Lab.
