Learn about the Scoop Commute carpool program on Jan. 29 at the Building 91 parking lot near the food trucks between 11 a.m and 1:30 p.m. Representatives will be available to answer questions and pass out coupons for use at the food trucks.
Scoop Commute, the Lab’s carpooling partner, is a convenient, affordable, and eco-friendly daily commute option. Over 700 Lab employees and affiliates already use the app, which matches participants with fellow Lab community members going the same way. Riders are eligible for average ride costs of $1 to $5 each way, and drivers in the program can park in one of the Lab’s designated carpool spaces and will be reimbursed for every carpool trip.
The carpooling program is flexible and allows participants to choose rides that fit their schedules. In the app, riders set their home addresses where they can be picked up and dropped off. To schedule rides, participants can make morning commute requests by 9 p.m. the night before and afternoon return trips by 2 p.m. the same day.
For best results when using the app:
- Schedule rides to the Lab Monday through Wednesday between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
- Set a 45-60 minute window to increase your chances of finding a match.
Beyond the personal benefits and flexibility, carpooling helps reduce traffic congestion and emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment. It’s also an opportunity to meet new colleagues and build professional relationships during the commute.

Hi there
I am confused about this sentence “Riders are eligible for average ride costs of $1 to $5 each way, and drivers in the program can park in one of the Lab’s designated carpool spaces and will be reimbursed for every carpool trip.” I saw I need to pay the driver $9 for each ride. Do you mean I can get some reimbursement ($1-5) from LBL? How should I pay the driver?
Hi Li, thank you for reaching out. All transactions take place through the Scoop Commute app, so no direct payments are made between the driver and rider. The average cost for a ride is $1-5 but may be more depending on the distance of travel. The Lab is not involved in any transactions. Hope that helps.
Thank you,
Soomin
I am echoing the previous comment and am not sure about the part “reimbursed for every carpool trip”. I am still unclear on how will a driver or rider be reimbursed for each trip. It is my understanding that initially, each person will pay for the trip and then eventually the amount will be reimbursed directly in the Scoop app as a credit?
Hi Kushal, thank you for reaching out. The reimbursement process is handled automatically within the Scoop app through a balance system. When you drive, the trip cost is credited to your Scoop Balance. When you ride, the cost is debited from your Balance. If your Balance is positive, it will be used first for future rides. Any negative Balance at the end of the week is charged to your credit card on file.
