Berkeley Lab is eliminating most physical parking permits and will enforce the current policy requiring commuters to add their car or motorcycle license plate information to their Lab profiles. The new rules go into effect Nov. 1.
Visit the Lab Human Resources self-service website and choose “Personal Info” to add, change, or delete vehicle information.
Lab employees currently eligible to park at the hill site will still be able to, and physical permits will still be necessary for green circle, construction, stacked, and disability parking. Only those with proper permits are authorized to park in these designated spaces.
“The new, streamlined parking process makes oversight easier, reduces time and waste, and helps eliminate errors such as forgetting a parking placard,” said John Chernowski, the Lab’s senior manager of transportation and parking demand. “Instead, vehicle license plate numbers will be tied to an individual’s Lab badge, making identification more accurate.”
Lab leaders also expect site access and Lab parking policy compliance to improve. People violating parking enforcement rules will receive warnings, and repeated violations could result in disciplinary action including the revocation of Lab parking privileges.
If you have already registered your vehicle with the Lab’s Badge Office, you do not need to do anything further. It’s a badge holder’s responsibility to keep the parking registration information current. Parking placards should be discarded responsibly and can be thrown into recycling bins at home or throughout the Lab.

How will carpools be monitored? Will physical placards still be required?
Carpool spaces will continue to be patrolled every morning. Vehicles parked in carpool spaces must display a daily carpool permit or risk a citation.
How is this change impacting carpool spots?
Daily carpool permits will be issued at Lab gates to vehicles with at least two active LBNL badges and one individual with regular-hours parking privileges. These permits must be displayed to park in a carpool space.
