Did you know? Labwide policy requires employees to have a Return-to-Work visit with Health Services after an absence of 5 or more consecutive workdays due to illness, or after any absence caused by a work-related injury or illness.
This visit ensures the employee can perform job functions without risk to themselves or others, helps identify necessary workplace adjustments, and facilitates a safe return to work.
Depending on the situation, the process may include:
- Providing a medical release from your doctor, including any temporary work restrictions, if applicable.
- Receiving guidance from the Integrated Disability and Absence Management (IDAM) Office regarding your eligibility and rights regarding a possible protected leave under federal and state laws, and/ or workplace accommodation.
Under Family and Medical Leave, serious health conditions refer to illnesses, injuries, or impairments that involve a period of incapacity (inability to work/do daily activities) and require treatment, which can be episodic (such as chronic conditions) or long-term. Both physical and mental health conditions may qualify, while minor illnesses, such as colds, uncomplicated flu, routine dental issues, or seasonal allergies, generally do not.
Health Services conducts the Return-to-Work visit to confirm that the employee can return safely and receive appropriate support. To schedule a Return-to-Work consultation, contact Health Services at healthservices@lbl.gov or call (510) 486-6266.
