Are you prepared to help a colleague, friend, or loved one in a medical emergency? While CPR/AED and Stop the Bleed training has traditionally been an 8-hour mandatory course for the roughly 30% of staff whose roles require it, a condensed version is now available to everyone.
The Security and Emergency Services Division, the Environment, Health, and Safety Division, and the Fire Marshal’s Office have teamed up to offer a 2-hour optional training course for the Lab community. This interactive session combines condensed CPR/AED instruction with a certified “Stop the Bleed” class, teaching participants to handle life-threatening hemorrhages — a critical skill in a Lab environment full of heavy machinery and construction. By expanding this training beyond mandated staff, the program aims to strengthen the Lab’s safety culture and empower everyone to act with confidence in an emergency.
Led by Roland Quizon, Lab Fire Inspector and lead instructor, the curriculum focuses on hands-on, scenario-based practice. Participants will learn to use a pocket mask, hands-only CPR, and a combination with rescue breaths. Instructors simulate the stress and urgency of a real emergency, helping participants build confidence and get past common fears, like the worry of breaking a patient’s ribs during CPR.
Completing the course provides an official Stop the Bleed certification, and hours are formally logged in Berkeley Lab Training by Emergency Management.
