Carpooling can save you substantial time and money while providing access to a variety of resources that make your commute easier. Learn how to take advantage of these benefits in the Bay Area and at the Lab.

  • Carpool Savings: Bay Area bridge tolls increased 50 cents on January 1st, making carpooling a great way to save both time and money. By sharing driving costs with two or more people, you can take advantage of discount bridge tolls if applicable, and avoid traffic by using carpool lanes. See how much lower your commute costs could be using the 511 carpool savings calculator.
  • Park & Ride Lots: Meet your carpool partners at one of the 150 conveniently-located, free Park & Ride lots across the Bay Area. Many of these central locations also provide connections to transit and even bike lockers. View all available locations on the 511 interactive map.
  • Guaranteed and Emergency Ride Home Programs: If you use alternative transportation like carpooling, many counties offer programs to ensure you have a ride home in case of an emergency, such as illness, family crisis, or unplanned overtime. Some counties require pre-registration. Find the list of available programs by county here.
