The Lab’s Health Services department has earned a gold seal certification from the health accreditation, certification, and verification group The Joint Commission. The designation means Health Services at the Lab complies with the highest national standards for safety and quality of care and recognizes the group’s commitment to continually improving patient care.
“This is the same accreditation that organizations such as Stanford and UCSF hospitals have,” said Rangineh Bassir, the Health Services Manager for the Lab’s Environment, Health & Safety Division. “We’ve come a long way in two years, and this accreditation validates those efforts; we take a lot of pride in providing competent, compassionate care to the Lab community.”
The Lab’s Health Services department offers a variety of services such as injury and illness care, convenient care (light episodic urgent care), flu clinics, wellness services, travel health, among others services. These services benefit Berkeley Lab employees and support Lab research projects.
Bassir said Health Services sought the accreditation to demonstrate that the Lab puts the health interests of the Lab community front and center and is a leading provider of safe patient care. “We began a little more than two years ago to really assess best standards and practices and apply extra rigor to our services,” she added.
Some of the areas Bassir said they looked into were how to more effectively and efficiently achieve infection control and maintain a clean environment; how practitioners talk to patients, make clinical decisions, and document cases. “All those are factors that play a big role in maintaining our accreditation,” she said.
“We want the Lab community to know the extent to which we’ve gone to hold ourselves accountable and earn this gold seal of approval. Earning the trust of our patients is very important for us, and we want to be the trusted place that our patients choose to go to.”
